Alexandria, LA (2/13/2024) – The Alexandria Fire Department (AFD) sprung into action on the evening of February 10, 2024, responding to a fully involved building fire at 2211 North MacArthur Drive. The incident, which occurred at approximately 6:01 PM, prompted a swift and comprehensive response from AFD personnel.
Upon receiving the initial alarm, the first unit arrived on the scene within two minutes, with a full complement of units arriving within eight minutes. AFD dispatched a significant contingent, including six engine companies, two aerial companies, a medical unit, two district chief units, and a fire investigative team unit, to tackle the blaze.
The severity of the fire and the challenging weather conditions necessitated the striking of three additional alarms. Despite the efforts of firefighters, one firefighter sustained injuries during the suppression efforts. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by a joint team of investigators.
Coinciding with this incident is a contentious discussion surrounding the property at 2211 North MacArthur Drive within the Alexandria City Council. During a recent Property and Zoning Committee Meeting on February 6, 2024, no representatives from the property were present, raising eyebrows among council members.
Mayor Jacques Roy addressed accusations leveled against him during the council meeting, seemingly in reference to claims made by a radio DJ accusing the mayor of abusing his power to suppress freedom of speech. In response, Mayor Roy asserted, “…There is a universal mandate from this body… to start getting structures that are unsafe out of the way so that structures that are new and better serve people can be there…”
The convergence of the building fire and the ongoing controversy surrounding the property at 2211 North MacArthur Drive underscores the complex dynamics at play within the Alexandria community. As investigations into both the fire and the allegations against Mayor Roy continue, residents await further developments with bated breath.
