Birmingham, AL (9/20/2023) – Johnny Mims, band director of Minor High School, was arrested after he continued to direct the band playing a popular Cameo Band song, “Talking Out the Side of Your Neck,” also known as “Neck.”
Officers approached Mr. Mims approximately 18 minutes after the football game ended to ask him to disband because band members were still in the stands playing.
Mr. Mims informed that was their last song and they were almost finished and continued to direct the band for a few seconds even after the stadium lights were turned off.
In an attempt to arrest the band director, officers claimed he swung at them, but the band director says it was dark, and he didn’t know who approached him. He was tased at least three times as officers attempted to get him in handcuffs.
After receiving treatment at a local hospital, Mr. Mims was jailed for disorderly conduct, harassment, and resisting arrest. He was released Friday on bail and has obtained legal counsel regarding this matter.
