Alexandria City Council Faces Public Backlash & Demands Transparency in Upcoming Meeting Today at 5:00 PM

Alexandria, LA (4/16/2024) – The City Council of Alexandria is set to convene today at 5:00 PM for a regular meeting, but tensions are running high in the aftermath of recent controversies and allegations of lack of transparency.

The meeting comes on the heels of a series of events that have rocked the community, starting with the mayor’s unannounced council briefing on March 28th. This move raised eyebrows and led to speculation about the city administration’s intentions.

Furthermore, the last city council meeting descended into chaos when outspoken citizen and veteran Mr. Cornelius White was arrested for speaking out. This incident sparked outrage among residents and drew attention to concerns about freedom of speech and public participation in government affairs.

Adding fuel to the fire, the council recently implemented changes requiring citizens to physically review the extensive 281-page proposed capital and operating budget at the council’s office. This decision has been met with criticism, as it presents logistical challenges and limits access for those unable to visit the council’s office.

In addition, there has been confusion surrounding the requirements of a freedom of information request for reviewing the supporting documentation of council agenda items. Councilmen Jim Villard, President, Lee Rubin, and Gary Johnson have stated that they were unaware of these requirements new requirements.

As the community gears up for today’s meeting, residents are demanding answers and transparency from their elected officials. Many are expected to attend the meeting to voice their concerns and hold the council accountable for its actions.

The council’s agenda includes a range of items, from ordinances authorizing bids for various city projects to resolutions requesting legal opinions and public hearings on the mayor’s proposed 2024/2025 operating and capital budgets.

With tensions running high and public scrutiny intensifying, all eyes will be on the City Council as they navigate through the agenda and address the pressing issues facing the community.

Note: No supporting documentation is included, due to new requirements for requesting public information.

The meeting is scheduled to take place at the City Council Chambers at 5:00 PM, Committee meeting start at 4:40 PM and members of the public are encouraged to attend and participate in the democratic process.
