Rapides, Parish, LA (3/25/2024) – On March 23, 2024, at approximately 12:40 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a one-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 496 near Cooper Road.
The tragic incident claimed the life of 61-year-old Maxwell Smith of Deridder.
According to the initial investigation, a 2001 Harley Davidson motorcycle, operated by Smith, was traveling westbound on Louisiana Highway 496. For reasons still under investigation, Smith failed to negotiate a left-hand curve, causing the vehicle to veer off the roadway.
Subsequently, the motorcycle collided with a curve warning sign, leading to Smith being ejected from the vehicle.
Despite wearing a non-DOT approved helmet, Smith sustained severe injuries in the crash. He was swiftly transported to a local hospital, where, regrettably, he succumbed to his injuries. Routine toxicology samples were collected and will be submitted for analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.
Troopers emphasize the importance of motorcycle safety and urge all riders to enroll in approved motorcycle safety courses. These courses provide valuable insights into safe riding practices and equip riders with essential skills to mitigate the risk of injury in the event of an accident.
Practicing responsible decision-making while operating a motorcycle, including abstaining from impaired driving and adhering to traffic regulations, can significantly impact safety outcomes. Motorists are reminded that if they encounter hazardous situations on the road, they can dial LSP (577) to connect with the nearest Troop and report the activity.
In 2024, Troop E Troopers have investigated 15 fatal crashes resulting in 17 fatalities.
