Body Found in Catahoula Parish Identified as Sheryl Turner of New Iberia, LA

Catahoula Parish, LA (2/26/2024) – The discovery of human remains along the banks of the Ouachita River has brought closure to a family in New Iberia, Louisiana, as authorities confirm the identity of the deceased as 19-year-old Sheryl Turner.

On January 24, 2024, a local boater made the somber discovery, prompting an immediate response from authorities. Coroner Raymond Rouse ordered an autopsy, and the remains were transferred to Broussard, Louisiana, on January 25, 2024, for further examination, including DNA and toxicology tests.

Amidst efforts to identify the deceased, detectives stumbled upon a missing person report for Sheryl Turner, filed by her twin sister, Sherry Turner. Sheryl had purportedly embarked on a journey to Monroe with an unidentified companion, triggering concerns for her safety. Sherry offered her DNA to facilitate the identification process.

However, complications arose as Sherry was unavailable for DNA sampling due to health issues related to her pregnancy. Detectives coordinated with the New Iberia Police Department to collect the necessary samples, ultimately contributing to the positive identification of Sheryl Turner.

During the investigation, authorities interviewed Jerone Isiah Tines, with whom Sheryl had stayed for a period. Tines corroborated Sheryl’s intended trip to Monroe, recounting his last interaction with her on January 2, 2024.

Despite challenges, diligent efforts led to a breakthrough on February 23, 2024, when verbal confirmation of Sheryl’s identity was provided by the North Louisiana Crime Lab. Law enforcement officials promptly notified Sheryl’s family, providing them with the closure they desperately sought.

Sheriff Toney Edwards emphasized the ongoing nature of the investigation, urging anyone with information about Sheryl’s activities in the Monroe area to come forward. He expressed gratitude to all involved agencies and underscored the importance of timely reporting of missing persons.

However, allegations of a lack of support from New Iberia law enforcement have surfaced, with family and friends expressing dissatisfaction with the initial response to Sheryl’s disappearance.

As the community mourns the loss of Sheryl Turner, her story serves as a touching reminder of the importance of compassion and thorough investigation in such cases.

Authorities continue to collaborate across jurisdictions to seek justice for Sheryl and her family, reaffirming their commitment to serving the community.
