17-year-old Charged with Negligent Homicide After Fatal Shooting on Sunset Drive

Alexandria, LA (6/12/2024) – On Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at approximately 12:40 PM, the Alexandria Police Department responded to a residence in the 100 block of Sunset Drive following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of 21-year-old Devyn Sells, a resident of Alexandria, LA, who had succumbed to an apparent gunshot wound.

In connection with the incident, 17-year-old Jeremiah Dorsey, also of Alexandria, LA, was taken into custody. Dorsey has been charged with one count of negligent homicide.

According to Louisiana law, negligent homicide is defined as “the killing of a human being by criminal negligence.” Criminal negligence exists when, “although neither specific nor general criminal intent is present, there is such disregard of the interest of others that the offender’s conduct amounts to a gross deviation below the standard of care expected to be maintained by a reasonably careful person under like circumstances” (Louisiana Revised Statutes 14:32).
