LEESVILLE, La. (2/27/2025) – A 14-year-old arrested at Leesville High School on Thursday was found in possession of a handgun, according to police.
Officers from the Leesville Police Department and the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office responded after school officials reported the incident.
The investigation confirmed that the student had the handgun concealed in his waistband. No threats were made, and no injuries were reported.
Leesville Police took the student into custody and charged him with Carrying a Firearm by a Student on School Property (LA R.S. 14:95.2) and Illegal Possession of a Handgun by a Juvenile (LA R.S. 14:95.8).Â
Under Louisiana law, carrying a firearm on school property carries a sentence of up to five years in prison with or without hard labor. Illegal possession of a handgun by a juvenile can result in up to six months in juvenile detention and fines up to $500for a first offense.
The student remains in custody while the case proceeds. The Leesville Police Department stated they will continue working with school officials and the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office to ensure student and staff safety.
