Tropical Storm Beryl Approaches Texas Coast, Forecast to Become a Hurricane

In the early hours of Sunday, July 7, 2024, the National Weather Service issued an updated advisory for Tropical Storm Beryl, currently tracking through the central Gulf of Mexico. As of 4:00 AM, the storm was centered near 25.3 N, 94.6 W, approximately 60 miles south of Matagorda Bay, Texas. Beryl is carrying maximum sustained winds of 60 MPH but is expected to strengthen significantly throughout the day.

Expected Changes and Warnings

The forecast track for Beryl has adjusted eastward by about 30 miles from earlier predictions. With this shift, the storm is now projected to make landfall near Matagorda Bay, Texas, late tonight or in the early hours of Monday morning. At landfall, Beryl is anticipated to reach hurricane strength, classified as a Category 1, with maximum winds increasing to around 85 MPH.

Due to the eastward shift in the storm’s path and the expected intensification, the National Weather Service has issued a tropical storm watch from High Island to Sabine Pass in Texas. This watch covers coastal areas of Jefferson County, alerting residents to the potential of tropical storm force winds within the next 48 hours.

Preparation and Safety Measures

Residents in the watch areas are advised to review their hurricane plans and remain vigilant as conditions can deteriorate rapidly. Emergency services are on high alert, and evacuation plans are in place for the most vulnerable coastal areas. Those in the projected path of Beryl are urged to secure properties, prepare emergency kits, and stay informed through official channels for any further updates.
