Tropical Disturbance in the Western Gulf of Mexico Expected to Develop into a Tropical Storm

The National Weather Service in Lake Charles has issued an important update on Sunday, September 8, 2024, regarding a tropical disturbance currently located in the western Gulf of Mexico, officially labeled Invest 91L.

The disturbance has a high probability (90%) of developing into a tropical storm within the next 48 hours as it moves northwestward toward the Gulf Coast.

Potential Impacts

Although it is too early to determine the exact path and intensity of the storm, meteorologists are closely monitoring the system. The upper Texas and Louisiana coasts are at risk of experiencing the storm’s impacts by mid-week, starting late Tuesday, September 10. Residents in these areas should be prepared for:

• Strong winds: Tropical storm-force winds could affect coastal and inland areas.
• Storm surge: Dangerous coastal flooding may occur along low-lying areas, depending on the storm’s intensity.
• Heavy rainfall: Widespread flooding is a possibility, particularly in areas already prone to flooding. Flash floods could develop quickly in the event of prolonged heavy rain.

What Should You Do?

Now is the time to take the following precautions:

1. Stay informed: Pay close attention to updates from the National Weather Service and other official sources. Forecasts are likely to become more specific over the next few days.
2. Review your emergency plan: Ensure that your family knows what to do in the event of an evacuation or storm emergency. Make sure your hurricane kit is stocked with essentials like food, water, medications, and batteries.
3. Prepare your property: Secure loose items around your home that could be blown away in strong winds. If you live in a flood-prone area, consider flood-proofing measures and clearing drainage systems.

Monitoring the Storm

The system is expected to strengthen further as it moves closer to land, and additional watches or warnings may be issued for portions of northeastern Mexico, southern Texas, and Louisiana. Tropical Storm Watches may be required as early as Monday, September 9, 2024, for these areas.

While the exact landfall location and timing remain uncertain, all coastal residents should take this disturbance seriously. The National Weather Service urges everyone to begin preparations now and remain alert for updates as conditions evolve.

As the system approaches, expect possible road closures, power outages, and disruptions to daily life. Staying informed and prepared will ensure the safety of you and your family during this potential tropical storm.
