State: Shooting at a Bogalusa High Basketball Game; one juvenile shot and killed

Bogalusa, LA (1/12/2023) – The Bogalusa Police Department reported a shooting at a Bogalusa High Basketball game on last night.

On, January 11, 2024 at 2042 Officers working a basketball game at the Bogalusa High School heard numerous gunshots coming from the area of M.J. Israel Dr at Avenue B.

Officers responded to this location and located two black male subjects suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers immediately began administering first aid, requested EMS and began securing the scene.

The Parish’s School Superintendent released the following message:

In the wake of last night's unimaginable tragedy that has befallen our school community, we find ourselves grappling with profound sorrow. Although this incident occurred off campus, it was close enough to have an adverse effect on the school event that was taking place. We value everyone's safety and concerns; the remaining home basketball games will be played away or at a neutral site. As a resilient community, we will rise above the grief that weighs heavily on our hearts. Let us channel our sorrow into a shared commitment to support one another so we can heal and emerge stronger and more compassionate by standing united.

As a precaution, we will provide extra security for Bogalusa High School when school resumes on Tuesday, and grief counselors will be available for staff and students.

The Lumberjack family extends our sympathy and condolences to the students' families. We appreciate the phone calls, emails, and support from school districts, citizens, and stakeholders.

Dr. Byron C. Hurst, Ed.D.
Superintendent
