Memphis, TN (1/30/2023) – The sixth Memphis Police Officer was relieved of duty. Preston Hemphil was involved in response to Tyre Nichols’s arrest. Hemphill is the officer that tased Tyre, which can be seen in Video 1 (WARNING: The video contains graphic content and language. Viewer discretion is advised.) of footage released by the Memphis Police Department.
Hemphill said, “I hope they stomp his ass,” according to a body cam video.
According to a Memphis Official, Hemphill “…was the third officer at the initial stop of Mr. Nichols,” the official added Hemphill is “cooperating” with investigators.
Hemphill was relieved of duty and placed on administrative leave, per Memphis Police.
He joined the department in 2018.
