Scott, LA (3/19/2023) – The Scott Fire Department reported a semi-truck hauling a hazardous chemical overturned on Mills Street.
The positioning and location of the semi-truck and trailer involved in the accident in the 200 block of Mills Street posed several issues in the transfer process. After several attempts throughout the night, fire and hazmat personnel could not transfer the 45,000 pounds of acrylic acid from the wrecked trailer. Acrylic acid forms the polymers used in plastics, paints, and coatings.
To minimize the hazards to first responders and civilians, specialized equipment will arrive from Geismar, Louisiana, around 9:00 a.m. March 19, 2023.
The 100-yard evacuation order has been lifted and will be reinstated once the equipment arrives, and the transfer process begins. We still ask everyone to avoid the area due to the amount of equipment on the scene.
