Covent, LA (2/1/2023) – According to Sheriff Bobby Webre, the remains of Robert Lee Hampton, 26, of Gonzales, were located in a sugar cane field in Convent.
Detectives with the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s office began investigating the whereabouts of Hampton after his family reported him missing on January 19. The St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating this case as a homicide, with assistance from the APSO.
On January 28, 2023, at 8:18 am, the Sheriff’s Office received a call from Wildlife and Fisheries that an agent discovered the body of a black male on a sugarcane field road in Convent. After deputies arrived on the scene, it was discovered that the male subject was shot multiple times at the location where his body was discovered.
On January 30, 2023, detectives confirmed that the deceased male was the same as the man reported missing on January 25, 2023, in Ascension Parish. The victim is Robert Lee Hampton, 26 years old. Robert resided in Bay City, Texas, and had family residing in Ascension Parish.
Since discovering Robert’s body, St. James Sheriff’s Office has been working with Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office in this investigation. Family members reported Robert missing in Ascension Parish on January 25, 2023. Detectives were advised that the last time anyone saw or spoke to Robert was on January 19, 2023. Robert’s vehicle, a black 4-door Dodge Charger was found located on January 19, 2023, and burned in Ascension Parish.
