Lettsworth Man Killed in Rapides Parish Crash

Rapides Parish, LA (5/28/2024) – A fatal two-vehicle crash occurred on May 28, 2024, at approximately 11:00 p.m., claiming the life of 49-year-old Dion Allen from Lettsworth.

Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to the scene of the crash at the intersection of Louisiana Highway 107 and Louisiana Highway 3128.

According to the initial investigation, a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban driven by 43-year-old Charlie Hughes of Alexandria was traveling eastbound on Highway 3128 when Hughes failed to stop at the intersection’s active flashing red light. As a result, the Chevrolet entered the southbound lane of Highway 107 and was struck by a 2007 Nissan Murano.

Hughes, who was not wearing a seatbelt, sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Dion Allen, a passenger in the Chevrolet and also unrestrained, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and two passengers in the Nissan, who were wearing seatbelts, sustained minor injuries.

Routine toxicology samples were taken from both drivers and submitted for analysis as part of the ongoing investigation. The Louisiana State Police emphasized that distracted and inattentive driving remains a significant cause of crashes in the state. They urged motorists to stay vigilant and focused while driving to prevent such tragedies.

“While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury,” the Louisiana State Police stated. “Always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained can often mean the difference between life and death.”

This crash marks the 24th fatal collision investigated by Troop E in 2024, resulting in a total of 26 deaths.
