High-Speed Chase Ends in Arrest on I-49: Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office Report

Rapides Parish, LA (2/24/2024) – On February 24, 2024, deputies from the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office engaged in a high-speed pursuit on Interstate 49 near mile marker 108.

The incident began at approximately 8:45 AM when deputies attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation.

The driver, later identified as Lawrence Joseph Syon, 41, from Lafayette, refused to comply with the deputies’ instructions and continued southbound on I-49 at speeds exceeding 95 miles per hour.

As the pursuit progressed, law enforcement officers from the Alexandria Police Department and troopers from the Louisiana State Police joined the effort. With coordinated assistance, spike strips were deployed around mile marker 80, effectively disabling the suspect vehicle, which came to a stop without further incident.

Lawrence Joseph Syon was subsequently taken into custody and placed under arrest. Upon investigation, Syon was found to be in possession of a significant quantity of marijuana and a firearm. Further checks revealed that Syon was a convicted felon with active warrants in Vermilion and Lafayette Parishes.

Syon faces multiple charges including speeding, aggravated flight from an officer, reckless operation of a vehicle, driving under suspension, possession of a firearm by 9a convicted felon, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and possession of a firearm with drugs. As of the time of this report, Syon remains incarcerated at the Rapides Parish Detention Center.

The Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude to the Alexandria Police Department and Louisiana State Police for their collaborative efforts in apprehending the suspect.
