Gorum Wildfire Update: Fire Contained

Natchitoches, LA (9/2/2023) – The Natchichotes Parish Sheriff’s Office reported the Gorum Wildfire was contained.

At 9:53 pm, Natchitoches Parish Fire Protection District #1 Fire Chief Michael Sanders reported that a combined effort of local, state, and federal firefighters with air support has led to the Lake Gorum Road Wildfire being contained within fire lanes, according to Sheriff Stuart Wright.

Some fire units will remain in the area monitoring the fire throughout the night, while others are being relieved and will return in the morning.

Officials described the fire as massive. The actual acreage destroyed is not known at this time. There were no reports of homes being destroyed or damaged.

Voluntary evacuations may return to their residences if they choose to; however, there is heavy smoke in the area and it is not recommended if you suffer from respiratory issues.

NPSO thanked the Shreveport National Weather Service for providing periodic reports of weather conditions in the area, such as wind speed, wind direction, humidity values, etc.

The sheriff also thanked NPSO Deputies, NATCOM 911, the brave firefighters from Natchitoches Parish Fire District #1, Natchitoches Parish Fire District #4, Natchitoches Parish Fire District #5, Natchitoches Parish Fire District #6, Natchitoches Parish Fire District #7, Natchitoches Parish Fire District #9, Flatwoods Fire Department, the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, US Forest Service, RoyOMartin Plywood, and Fire Air Support. Other agencies recognized by the NPSO Sheriff included the Louisiana State Police, Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office, La. Department of Transportation and Development, Natchitoches Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, and the Lousiana GOSHEP for all your assistance.
