Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Domestic violence is one evil in our community that is often kept secret.  It is an issue that touches every race, every gender, every profession, and every person.

Unfortunately, Domestic violence sees no boundaries on what part of society it affects. The recent arrest of a veteran APD officer suggests that it can happen no matter where you sit in society.

  • 10 million men and women a year are physically abused by a person they are in a relationship with.
  • 1 out of 4 women
  • 1 in 7 men is an actual physical domestic violence abuse victim.

If you or someone you know is a victim of physical abuse, seek help. Don’t think that they will change. They will, for the worse. It will not stop. We see it all too often where it doesn’t.

If you are an abuser, seek help as well. You are the problem and should not be putting your hands on someone you say you love.

Domestic violence and the perpetrators are wrong. No matter the circumstances putting your hand on an adult who can’t defend themselves is pathetic!

If you are a perpetrator or victim and need help, the information is below:

Someone you trust. Turn to a friend, loved one, neighbor, co-worker, or religious or spiritual adviser for support.

National Domestic Violence Hotline: 800-799-SAFE (800-799-7233; toll-free). Louisiana Hotline: (800-411-1333)  Call the hotline for crisis intervention and referrals to resources, such as women’s shelters.

Your health care provider. A healthcare provider typically will treat injuries and can refer you to safe housing and other local resources.

A local women’s shelter or crisis center. Shelters and crisis centers typically provide 24-hour emergency shelter, advice on legal matters, and advocacy and support services.

A counseling or mental health center. Counseling and support groups for women in abusive relationships are available in most communities.

A local court. A court can help you obtain a restraining order that legally mandates the abuser to stay away from you or face arrest. Local advocates might be available to help guide you through the process.
