Alexandria Residents Question City Council’s Push for Tax Renewal

ALEXANDRIA, La. (2/24/2025) – The Alexandria City Council tax renewal is set for discussion at tomorrow’s meeting, but many residents are questioning the need for it.

The measure seeks to continue an 11.51-mill special tax, expected to generate about $5.4 million annually for infrastructure projects. However, the current tax does not expire until 2028, leaving some wondering why the council is rushing the renewal.

Several residents contacted UrbanCast and InvolvedInItAll.com expressing frustration. “Why do they need to continue collecting this tax? I haven’t seen any improvement in my community in the last 30 years, and I live in District 3,” one resident stated. Others pointed out that the city remains about 60 officers short in the police department, suggesting the council redirect funds instead of seeking a long-term tax extension.

Critics also argue that the language of the resolution is vague and lacks accountability. The measure does not clearly define how the funds will be used, nor does it align with the well-publicized, community-driven master plan. Some believe any tax renewal should include specific commitments tied to clear infrastructure goals.

In addition to the tax renewal, the council will also consider resolutions to authorize bids for electric meters and wastewater treatment chemicals. Another resolution proposes co-sponsoring the Louisiana Brownfield Conference, which focuses on environmental redevelopment.

The Alexandria City Council meeting begins at 5:00 PM in City Hall chambers. Residents can attend in person or watch live on UrbanCast. The outcome of the Alexandria City Council tax renewal discussion will determine how the city approaches infrastructure funding for the next two decades.
