Vernon Parish: 14-year-old shot; 17-year-old arrested

Knight Community, LA (4/18/2022) – The Vernon Parish Parish Sheriff’s Office (VPSO) reported a 14-year-old was shot by a 17-year-old on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at approximately 11:40 p.m., the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office received a report that a shooting had taken place at a residence in the area of Oakes Allardyce Road in the Knight Community.

Deputies responded to the residence and learned that a 14-year-old male, suffering from a gunshot wound to the arm, had left the residence and was en route to meet an ambulance via private vehicle.

Witnesses at the location indicated that a disagreement occurred at the residence between a group of young people. Several individuals involved in the disagreement got into a vehicle to leave the residence.

As the vehicle was departing the residence, an unknown person threw a rock shattering the back glass of the vehicle.

The vehicle stopped in the driveway, and a 17-year-old male exited the vehicle and began to fire gunshots in the direction of the home, subsequently striking the 14-year-old male.

Detectives arrived and began to process the scene. During this time, VPSO was contacted by the DeRidder Police Department (DPD) concerning a walk-in complaint of property damage to a vehicle that occurred in Vernon Parish.

Detectives learned that the DPD complainant was the father of the suspect involved in this shooting.

Detectives met with and interviewed the 17-year-old male and another minor in the suspect vehicle at the time of the incident.

Following the interview, the 17-year-old male was arrested and charged with one count of Aggravated Battery, one count of Aggravated Assault, one count of Illegal Possession of a Firearm by a Juvenile, and one count of Illegal use of a Weapon.

Detectives were able to recover the firearm that was used in the incident.

The victim was released from the hospital that night and is expected to recover fully.

VPSO had also responded to the same residence on Allardyce Road on April 13th and April 14th, relating to loud music complaints before the shooting on April 15th.
