Rapides Parish DA will not charge officer for shooting Jason Shackleford

Alexandria, LA (4/7/2023) – Rapides Parish District Attorney Phillip Terrell cleared Alexandria PD Officer Christopher Hayward of shooting Jason Shackleford. Officer Hayward was responding to a  911 call from a concerned citizen.

Terrell’s Thursday announcement cleared/exonerated Officer Hayward from any criminal charges stemming from the November 24, 2022, citizen complaint in which Mr. Shackleford was shot.

In a letter addressed to Chad Gremillion, Alexandria Chief of Police, Terrell said, after a comprehensive review, the evidence overwhelmingly demonstrates that the action of Deputy Anderson was justified.

Jason Shackleford, 34, was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, disarming a police officer, possession of fentanyl (less than 2 grams), resisting an officer by force or violence, and disturbing the peace.

Louisiana State Police released a Critical Incident Briefing Video (CIBV) which includes a body-worn camera, dashboard camera, and bystander recording footage.
