Plaquemine police chief indicted on five felony counts

Plaquemine, La. (11/22/2022) – On Monday, November 21, 2022, a grand jury indicted Plaquemine Police Chief Kenny Payne, 63. The indictment stems from allegations that on April 19, 2022, Payne demanded sexual favors from a victim to dismiss charges against her boyfriend.

Payne also faces accusations of ordering a lieutenant to delete text messages from the victim reporting sexual misconduct the same day.

On April 20, 2022, Payne requested that Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi not launch an investigation after the victim reported him.

According to the indictment, Payne is also accused of using a city-paid storage building for personal use.

Payne testified before the grand jury Monday to give his story. He did not want to say anything as he got on an elevator to exit the building.

District Attorney Tony Clayton said. “I have not seen that much in my 30 years, but he showed up and was given his opportunity.”

Payne turned himself into jail Tuesday morning before bonding out at $25,000.
