LaPlace, LA (2/3/2023) – A 13-year-old student at LaPlace Elementary was arrested Tuesday, February 1, 2023, for bringing a handgun to school.
At about 2:15 a.m., school resource officers learned that a teacher located a 9 mm handgun in a male student’s waistband as the student reported for a physical education class on the school campus. Students were placed on lockdown. No one was injured.
The student was charged with carrying a firearm or dangerous weapon by a student or nonstudent on school property, at school-sponsored functions, or in a firearm-free zone (felony). He is being held in custody at the Sherman Walker Correctional Facility.
“We are grateful to the students who came forward to report this situation,” Sheriff Mike Tregre said. “By reporting suspicious behavior, you may not only be saving your own life, but the lives of many others.”
Sheriff Tregre said that if parents or students see or hear something of concern, they should immediately bring it to the attention of an adult.
“Our district will continue to ensure that safety takes precedence overall as our scholars are educated each day,” Superintendent Rebecca Johnson said.
